Ah, here is a partial explanation of why we humans tend to do the opposite of good for ourselves. Basically it's this:
Throw the race and you maintain control.
You can't be successful at the perceived competition, but you can still control your part of it by deliberately failing. Still, and all, by keeping control of it (by deliberately scuttling it) you are admitting you cannot manage the reality of the chance of defeat; ironically, being afraid of a possible defeat brings on an early and certain defeat.
But at least you got control.
Man, fear really is the great motivator. I'm starting to wonder if it is the only motivator. As in, everything we do—even the warm fuzzies—is just a way of avoiding fears.
I wonder why I've been so negative in my thoughts lately ... other parts of my life are going so well right now ... hmm ...
