You know, it's hard to resist creating our lives out of the bits and pieces laid out before us, like a trayful of candies. It's sometimes so easy to just grab what is easiest and most available without any thought about it.

"Take one of these, and a couple of those ... have you tried these other ones yet?" (Or so the world seems to say to us.) More like, "Here's what to think about this. Here's how to react to that. No need to critically think about anything; just take what's offered for free, why don't you?"

But the real meaning, the real joy in life comes from making our own way, not taking something sweet but meaningless from the selection in front of us. I mean this in terms of social issues, or of reactions to events and phenomena.

The way we all look to each other to know how to react, instead of working out inside our feelings how to emote. And I say "we" because I know I do it too. The knee-jerk dismissive reaction is so easy. So simple and often sufficient to survive.

But there's no soul in it.
